The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of Adam Driks, PhD, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Stritch School of Medicine and one of the world鈥檚 leading experts on bacterial spores, including those causing anthrax. He passed away on June 6 from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Even in his days of illness, he valiantly continued to pursue his teaching and scientific ideals.
Upon being named Loyola鈥檚 2013 Scientist of the Year, Department Chair Katherine L. Knight, PhD, said, 鈥淒r. Driks is a model academic scientist, excelling in research, teaching, and service.鈥 He served as co-director of the Infectious Disease and Immunology Institute, and was an avid teacher of graduate students and medical students. In 2017, he was named Faculty Member of the Year by the Graduate School. Additionally, Adam served on the Committee on Academic Rank and Tenure, playing a key role in updating promotion and tenure guidelines.
Both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Defense funded Adam鈥檚 research. He was on the editorial board of several journals, including the Journal of Bacteriology, Molecular Microbiology, and the Journal of Chemical and Biological Defense. Additionally, he served on panels for the NIH and other federal agencies.
Adam received his PhD from Brandeis University and did post-doctoral training at Harvard University before joining 黑料门in 1995. He lived in Chicago with his wife.
