The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of Thomas S. Engeman, PhD, retired associate professor in the Department of Political Science. Tom passed away on Monday, March 11.

Tom joined the political science faculty in 1975, teaching both undergraduate鈥 and graduate鈥搇evel courses around the broad theme of political theory, including 鈥淚ntroduction to Political Theory,鈥 鈥淎merican Political Thought, 鈥淧olitics and Literature,鈥 and 鈥淎merican Political Thought to the Civil War.鈥

Tom鈥檚 research especially focused on American political thought and the founders of the American republic, leading to the publication of several scholarly books, including Thomas Jefferson and the Politics of Nature (edited volume published with the University of Notre Dame Press in 2000) and The Federalist Concordance (published with the University of Chicago Press in 1988).

Tom鈥檚 research was published in a variety of scholarly journals, including The Journal of Politics, Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy, The Review of Politics, and Perspectives on Political Science. He was also the recipient of several external grants, most notably from the John M. Olin, Jr. Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.

An active contributor to Loyola鈥檚 graduate program in political science, Tom directed the department鈥檚 annual Frank M. Covey, Jr. Endowed Lecture Series in Political Analysis.

His fellow colleague, Claudio J. Katz, PhD, recalls, 鈥淗e was always a pleasure to talk with鈥攈e had an ability to see the humor in human folly. He understood the art of conversation, and he was able to raise the rest of us to his level.  This art, like Tom, is missed.鈥
