Recent Art History Publications by Dr. Olivia Wolf

Dr. Olivia Wolf, Assistant Professor in Art History, has published several new peer-reviewed texts over the 2022-23 academic year, engaging with both her primary and secondary areas of research in Latin American and Middle Eastern art, respectively.

Most recently, her article, "Transnational traces in the Espigas repository: Bib铆 Zogb茅's artistic production and early critical reception at the Galer铆as Witcomb (1934-1937)" was published as part of the bilingual Spanish-English Cuadernos series by the Centro de Estudios Espigas / Centro de Investigaciones en Arte y Patrimonio (CONICET-UNSAM). In this article, Wolf examines the creative production and critical framing of Arab-Argentine artist Bib铆 Zogb茅 via a series of exhibition catalogs published by the Buenos Aires-based Witcomb Gallery in the 1930s and 40s. By interpreting Zogb茅's oeuvre through a transnational and feminist lens, Wolf considers the social, political, and cultural significance of diaspora in the artist's production. Earlier this academic year, Wolf also co-edited a l on modern manifestations of the mud茅jar in Latin America with Dr. Fernando Martinez Nespral of the University of Buenos Aires. The special edition featured the work of a transnational array of scholars, hailing from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and the United States.
Wolf also published her chapter, "Islamic Architecture in the Americas: Advancing a Transregional and Hemispheric Approach鈥� (Chapter 7) in the edited volume, I, co-edited by Mohammad Gharipour and Daniel Coslett (Bristol: Intellect Press, 2022). The text calls for a rigorous expansion of the study of Islamic architecture across the Americas, from its northern to southernmost spheres, in a manner that emphasizes diasporic forms, transregional frameworks and global networks.
Last but not least, Wolf鈥檚 research on mosques in contemporary Latin America was featured in two chapters, titled "Argentina's King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center: Transnational Patronage and Aesthetics in Latin America's Largest Mosque Complex" and "Modern and Contemporary Mosques in Latin America: Tracing Local and Transnational Dimensions through Temporal and Geographic Frames", published in the edited volume, ) co-edited by Kathryn Moore and Hasan Uddin-Khan (Turnhout, Belgium: Brepols, 2022).
