
Community Immersion Program
The Community Immersion Program (CIP) at ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago’s School of Social Work intends to involve new MSW students immediately involved in their communities and connect them with their peers. Over the unique four-day program that is held the week prior to the start of classes, incoming students learn about social work’s evolution and its relationship with Jesuit ideals. Students take part in local community projects, learn more about the Social Work profession, and increase self-awareness in their professional role.
Day 1
Students receive an introduction into the history and evolution of social work.
Day 2-3
Students complete community work at a Chicago area community organization site.
Day 4
Students reconvene to reflect on the previous three days and discuss what they learned.
FAQs
Where are the community project sites?
On days 2 and 3 of the Community Immersion Program, students report to their assigned site, which might be a school, a social service agency, or a community service organization. The volunteer sites are assigned based on proximity to the students’ listed address*. Students will receive site information in early August.

What types of service work does the Community Immersion Program entail?
Community work includes general volunteer work, ranging from property improvement to organizational tasks.
How does the Community Immersion Program benefit incoming MSW students?
The Community Immersion Program aims to provide general information about the profession, and helps students build immediate connections with their peers before classes start. In addition, the program introduces students to different types of social work as well as potential organizations they might want to explore for internships or employment in the future.
How does the Community Immersion Program prepare students for the MSW program?
The program exposes students to ethics, and important skills to be aware and respond to client’s needs at the micro, mezzo and macro levels. The community project helps learn about different social work roles and how social service organizations/programs function. Many of the CIP sites are also agencies the school partners with for internships.
When does the Community Immersion Program take place?
The Community Immersion Program runs every fall semester for new summer & fall students.
We also invite spring students to join the program if they wish.
